For your Maker is your husband,
The Lord of hosts is His name;
And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel;
He is called the God of the whole earth.
Isaiah 54:5 (NKJV)
Isaiah 54:5 shows us several things about the Lord and several of His titles. It also shows us that they are linked to one another.
Names of the Lord Our Husband
- Our Maker is our Husband.
- Our Husband’s name is the Lord of Hosts.
- Our Redeemer is our Husband.
- Our Husband is the Holy One of Israel.
- Our Husband is called the God of the whole earth.
To make the jump from our Maker is our Husband, to our Husband is our Redeemer, we need to apply the transitive property of equality in math. It is important to note the punctuation in the verse along with the use of the conjunction “and,” which connects Maker and Redeemer. “For your Maker is your husband…and your Redeemer….”
Transitive Property of Equality
The transitive property of equality in math is, “If a=b, and b=c, then a=c.” So, if we apply the transitive property of equality to Isaiah 54:5, here is what it looks like:
A | B | ||
If | Husband | = | Maker, |
B | C | ||
And | Maker | = | Redeemer, |
A | C | ||
Then | Husband | = | Redeemer. |
Why is this important to know?
Knowing the names of the Lord our Husband is key to understanding how to communicate and interact with our Husband. In natural relationships, we know the names of our friends, co-workers, spouses, etc. We also know the different roles each of us have according to the title of boss, co-worker, mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, etc. When introducing someone, we do not introduce someone as his or her title in relationship to us. When a wife introduces her husband to her friends, it is not appropriate for her to say, “So and so, please meet my husband. Husband, please meet so and so.” “My husband” is not his name, nor is it the name another person would use refer to him. Rather, we introduce someone by his or her name. This is the same for the Lord as our Husband. In Christ, we share the Lord as our Husband. But, for those who are not yet believers, we need to know how to introduce our Husband by His name and His roles in order to communicate with others who He is—so that they too may get to know Him.
The more we get to know someone, the more we know them in their different roles and would approach them according to a particular role in certain situations. This is the same as getting to know and understand how to interact with the Lord our Husband. It is key to intimacy with Him. Over the course of the next while, more information will be forthcoming on the roles of our Husband according to His names in Scripture.
